Electromagnetic Brakes

The Electromagnetic Brake Retarder is a secondary braking system which increase driving safety and reduces operating costs or buses, emergency vehicles, recreational motorhome, and other heavy duty vehicles. The Brake Retarder is a self-contained unit that fits in line with your vehicle drive train. It operates independently of your normal service brakes and does not depend on any type of friction.

It is activated automatically by depressing the brake pedal or manually controlled by a multi-position switch on the dashboard or steering column. Sixteen powerful electromagnets exert a very strong drag force on two iron discs (rotors) attached to the drive train as they are switched on.

This creates a very effective braking (retarding) action with no actual metal-to-metal contact so there is no wear to the unit and much less wear to the standard service brakes. It is available in variety of sizes and various capacities, and can be adapted for 12 volt or 24 volt systems.

The Brake Retarder provides dramatically increased driving safety in normal, as well as any number of special weather conditions including sandy roads, ice, snow or wet road conditions.
